Gloria (Emilia) Barrera Rosillo, born on 07/31/1935. She was proudly from La Moncada, Guanajuato. No matter how forgetful she may have gotten, she never forgot that.

She is survived by 10 children, 24 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
She was so proud of her family. During family get togethers, if you caught her, you would catch her looking around at her family and smiling. Even though she would tell you she didn’t know one word in English, if you paid attention when people would be having conversations around her, she would laugh at the funny stories. The first time I caught her I made the mistake of saying “I thought you didn’t understand?”. She immediately turned around and stopped laughing as if nothing funny was said. I never made the mistake of pointing out her laughing at something said in English again. It’s one of my favorite memories of her.

I could go on and on about my memories of her. And even then I feel like I don’t know enough. There was still so much to learn from her, about her.

Since birth, Mama Gloria has been there. She’s always been a part of my life. She was immortal to me, it’s difficult to think otherwise. One thing I can say about her, everything she did, she did because she thought it was the best thing she can do. All she wanted to do was to love and take care of her loved ones. She never gave up on you, even when everyone else did.

Mama Gloria used to say she didn’t really like music. There was no singer she liked, no favorite song. I would ask her and she would say “a mi casi no me gusta la musica” (I don’t really care for music). One night I was playing music and I wanted to play something she likes, couldn’t get her to name a song she wanted to listen to. So I started playing random songs.
Por un Amor by Linda Rondstadt came on, and I just started singing to her telling her how much I loved that song. Then the most beautiful thing happened, she started singing with me. Word for word, she was looking at me and singing, I was looking at her and singing. Sometimes it’s the simplest of moments that help you find the most memorable thing about someone.

The memory of Mama Gloria will live on with us for the rest of our lives. Let’s honor her and live the best life possible. Love ardently, laugh frequently.

She has had many names throughout her life: Mama, Emilia, Gloria, Hija, Tia, Mama Gloria.

To Mama Gloria, you will live forever in our hearts.
