    Joanne Raye Coil

    November 24, 1933 - November 21, 2015

Joanne was her name, and she passed away just shy of her 82nd birthday. Born Joanne Raye Irwin to Harriet Ballard Irwin in Los Angeles, CA on November 24, 1933. Joanne was raised by loving parents, Harriet and V.L. McEnroe. As the granddaughter of a trolley car operator, Joanne was a third generation Los Angelean, whose grandparents were born in Venice, CA. Before becoming a full time wife and mother, Joanne worked at the Los Angeles Stock Exchange as a "stock runner." She married Jim Zink, and their early years were spent with the kids in Marin County. They moved to Calistoga in 1971, and purchased 52 acres of land to start a producing vineyard. Back to work after the kids had grown, Joanne enjoyed a strong community connection with her 20-plus year career as branch manager in the Napa Valley for Fidelity Savings and Loan, Napa Valley Bank, Bank of the West, and finally retiring from Citibank. She was proud to be the first and only female President of the Calistoga branch of Rotary International. When Joanne married Red Coil in 1979, he was the owner of Susie's Bar in Calistoga. She convinced Red to follow her lifelong dream to own a restaurant, and together they opened Susie's on the Mt. on Mt. St. Helena. In 1987, Joanne and Red followed another passion, and bought a ranch in Ferndale, CA to raise Thoroughbred race horses. Known affectionately, by the grandkids as "Crazy Grama Jo," she looked at life through rose-colored glasses. She enjoyed entertaining, dancing, music, horse racing, boating, Calistoga sprint cars, and was a passionate Raiders fan. She is survived by her husband, Burrell C. "Red" Coil, and his son, Burrell Jr. She leaves behind daughter, Jan Lee Zink Fechter and her husband, Dennis, (their children Amanda Kuiper (Alex) and Amy); daughter, Jill Ballard Zink Manfredi (her children Joseph and Isabella); and her son's daughters, Kim Baca (Brent, sons Darrell and Ryan); Jacqueline "Jackie" Zink, and Lindsey Zink. She asked for her toy poodle, Chico, with her last breath. She is predeceased by her son, James William "Jaimie" Zink II; her parents, Harriet and Mac; her former husband, Jim; and numerous cats, dogs & horses. Please enjoy a Bloody Mary on a deck in the sunshine, preferably overlooking the water, and toast to Joanne. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to The Rotary Foundation https://www.rotary.org/en/give. Local contributions in her honor may be made to The Sharpsteen Museum, P.O. Box 573, Calistoga, CA 94515. Internment at St. Helena Cemetery, Tuesday, December 29th, at 11:00 am. Memorial service following.
