George Robert Kernohan

George Robert Kernohan, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in his home on December 13, 2017, attended by members of his family. He was 84. George was the third of seven children, born on February 19, 1933 to Oscar and Margaret (Ogburn) Kernohan in Scotia, California. After high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the Korean War. He also served in Germany, Treasure Island San Francisco and France. While stationed as a guard at the American Embassy in Paris, he met his wife, Jeanette (Kissling), then a clerical worker in the United States Foreign Service. George and Jan returned to the United States, married, and settled in St. Louis, her hometown, in 1961. They had three children. He began a 30-year career with Anheuser Busch, and in 1976 was transferred to Fairfield. The family settled in Napa. George lived a life of service and was a constant mentor and example to others. He spent 20 years with the Boy Scouts as a Committee Member and Scoutmaster. After his retirement, he was the Commissary Officer on the Napa Sea Scout Ship Chaser for nearly 20 years. He was a very active member of the Kiwanis Club and a tireless volunteer at St. Johns Lutheran Church and School. An accomplished cook, he could prepare meals for 5 people or 500! George loved being with young people. His home was a gathering place for his children and grandchildren and their friends. Over the years, he hosted a number of exchange students from Colombia, Germany, and Slovakia. He remained in touch with them and befriended their families, which led to many visits back and forth, thus forming a network of friendship extending around the world. He is survived by his brother Jim, his children, David (Otilia) Kernohan, Jennifer (John) Andrew, and Linda (Brian) Kernohan McMichael, his grandchildren Anthony, Brianna, Joshua, Ariana, Abel, Isabel, Kathryn, and Daniel, and his great-grandson Elijah. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jan, his parents, four brothers and a sister. A memorial service will be held at St. Johns Lutheran Church, 3521 Linda Vista Ave. in Napa on Saturday, December 30 at 11:00 am, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.
